So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. In this chapter we have been told that Adam died v. Enoch did not die in the normal sense. The word is very common in the Old Testament, occurring times.

While it is also possible that someone on earth buried his body, it is more likely that God caused his mortal body to just cease to existing. When believers die, God takes their spirits to heaven. When the rapture occurs in the future 1 Thessalonians , the mortal bodies of believers will be transformed into immortal bodies 1 Corinthians As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them.

This is when the Lord descends from heaven to take all the believers out of this world and to meet them in the air. The Rapture The Scripture speaks of this great catching away. The Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth: Behold I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed-in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed 1 Corinthians Paul told the church at Thessalonica: For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord 1 Thessalonians , By faith Enoch was translated so that he did not see death, and was not found because God had translated him, for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God Hebrews Whether Enoch appears as one of the two witnesses at the end of time, we do know that he is an example of believers who will not taste death.

Therefore, one of the reasons for Enoch's translation is that he pre-figures an entire generation of believers who will not taste death. Victory Over Death Another purpose of Enoch's translation is that it highlights the truth of Scripture that there is an ultimate redemption for each of us who have placed our faith in the Lord. Though the great majority of believers will experience physical death, Enoch's example provides hope that believers will achieve an ultimate victory over death.

The Book of Hebrews mentions that his life pleased God. The phrase walked with God is also used of Noah. Walking with God speaks of a way of life in which people conduct themselves. When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am Almighty God; walk before me and be blameless Genesis Walking with God means more than keeping the law of God. Both Enoch and Abraham lived before the Mosaic Law was given.

Walking with God, is not, therefore, legalistically keeping a set of laws. It is a heart attitude, a way of life. In the midst of the other individuals mentioned in the genealogy of Genesis 5 Enoch had a continual relationship with God. Summary Enoch along with Elijah did not die. He is said to have walked with God. This means his life was one of pleasing God. Consequently God did not allow him to die. Enoch is also a pre-figurement of the rapture of the church-where the Lord translates all believers, living and dead, into His presence.

Strange as it may seem, nowhere in all the Bible does "translate" mean to make immortal! The original Greek word for "translate" is metatithemi.

The same Greek word is rendered "carried over" in Acts God took Enoch and buried him! In Deuteronomy we read also how God took Moses from the people after which he died and was buried by God. So Enoch was not made immortal after all! He was taken away and was not found. ALL his days were three hundred and sixty-five! Notice another proof that "translate" does not mean to make immortal. That is yet future! Since Enoch has not yet inherited eternal life he must be dead! This is exactly what Paul writes in Heb. Notice it! Hebrews lists those who had faith and Enoch is included among them. Then in verse 13 Paul proved that they had not inherited the promises by saying: "These ALL [including Enoch] died in faith? Which Death Did Enoch Escape? Enoch lived only three hundred sixty-five years.

Then what could Paul possibly have meant by saying: "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death ; and was not found because God had translated him? Rather, it says that Enoch " should not see death. Remember, there is more than one death mentioned in the Bible. There is a first death, and there is a second death Rev. Which death did Paul mean? The first death is appointed unto men Heb. That death cannot be humanly evaded. It is inevitable.

That death Enoch died, as we have already proved. But Paul was not writing about that death. The phrase " should not see" is in the conditional tense of the verb, having reference to a future event. Did Jesus ever speak of a death that might be escaped? He certainly did! And Enoch will be in the first resurrection because he met the conditions! Enoch had faith. He believed God and walked with God, obeying Him. In keeping the sayings of God, Enoch kept the sayings of Jesus too; because Jesus did not speak of Himself, but spoke what the Father commanded Him John Thus Enoch met the conditions so that he should not see death.

The second death shall never touch Enoch, because of his faith and obedience.
