Who is ymir in norse mythology

The Titans terrorize humanity by cannibalizing them, but are also a mysterious foundation to the world-building of the story. Ymir, a young girl in the Survey Corps, is revealed in the manga to be a human with the ability to transform into a Titan. She later explains she was worshipped by a cult as a goddess of the Titans before she was captured and transformed into a feral Titan. Ymir only gained the ability to transform after eating a human with the ability to transform into a Titan.

The cult that worshipped her had its own myth surrounding ancient giant deities with the ability to transform into Titans. The faith structure in Attack on Titan evolved from an Eldian woman named Ymir Fritz, who obtained the power to transform into a Titan and later was devoured by her daughters, splitting the transformation powers into nine distinct Titan forms. That is until the Marleyans defeated the Titans and subjugated the Eldians, even forcing them to use the Titan Shifting powers against other Eldians.

Attack on Titan took some traits from giants in the Norse myth—but the myth is even weirder than the manga it inspired. While this site provides the ultimate online introduction to the topic, my book The Viking Spirit provides the ultimate introduction to Norse mythology and religion period.
