In rehearsing, the cellist is particularly useful, partly because of usually playing a more sedate part, partly because of the lower register and being at the base of chords, and partly because of the physical layout of the instrument, the cellist and is in a good position to hear what they and the other instruments are doing and can give useful guidance.

So that is the character of the four instruments of the string quartet , but the characters of the musicians themselves please a very substantial part in the success of the music.

Updated March 17, These pieces are particularly useful to use with student groups. Knowing about these pieces, or at least knowing where to look to explore the possibilities and obtain parts can be enormously helpful to a coach in choosing repertoire for a group.

But, perhaps the group is not really ready to tackle that type of monumental masterpiece, or some members of the group have already worked on it. In other words, there is a ton more music out there to choose from than is generally thought to exist, and a lot of it is great learning material for student ensembles.

Nonetheless, there are several standards, most notably the five trios Beethoven wrote before his Opus 18 String Quartets. After that, many people get stumped about the repertoire and often skip forward to the Serenade by Dohnanyi. This is a magnificent six-movement piece that is technically difficult and surprisingly virtuosic, especially for the viola and cello. So what else is there for student groups to explore? Of the better-known composers, there are two trios by Schubert and over twenty by Boccherini.

The most common variation on the standard string trio is the version with two violins and viola. The trios by Kodaly and Fuchs are wonderful but difficult. There are even trios for two violas and violin. Have a look into the trios by Hummel. String quartet: an ensemble of four solo strings, traditionally two violins, viola and cello.

Through the achievements of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, it has come to symbolise the loftiest form of discourse in instrumental music.
